Author’s Note

This story is based on The Green Frog, a famous Korean folk tale. When I was little, I didn’t know how sad this story could be. Only after I became a dad and found my son crying after listening to this tale, I did realize taht I was somewhat insensitive to what the story was about. It features a green frog who doesn’t listen to his mother and eventually makes her become ill. My son didn’t understand the concept of death, but since he identified with the frog, he seemed to be afraid that bad things could happen to his mother for whatever he has done wrong. It occurred to me that he might have been hurt by the thought itself.

Rainbow after the Rain maintains the basic storyline of The Green Frog, but place an emphasis on the great love of the mother, and on hope, rather than sorrow or broken hearts. Children may not understand that all living things should eventually return to nature, but I hope that this book will help children feel the love of their mothers, and know that sorrow is always followed by hope.
